2019 Grant Recipients

The TAC trialed the Towards Zero Club Grants Program in 2019 in three AFL Victoria regions - Barwon, Goldfields and across the Metropolitan leagues. More than 120 clubs were awarded grants at the end of the season, with most clubs addressing the key criteria and displaying clear evidence to support their applications.

Below are some case studies of clubs who were awarded grant funding for their efforts in 2019.

A full list of grant recipients can be found further down the page.

AFL Goldfields - Lake Wendouree Football Netball Club

The Lake Wendouree Football Netball Club - or "The Lakers" as they are known as - submitted a successful grant application in 2019. The application clearly explained the various road safety activities the club took part in and promoted throughout the season. The activities included:

  • Displaying TAC ads on their digital scoreboard throughout the season.
  • Hosting a TAC promotional team at their home game to spread road safety messages.
  • All teams getting involved in Towards Zero Round and promoting Towards Zero Round on social media and;
  • Promoting TAC messages across the club's Facebook page all season.
  • Coordinating road safety sessions for younger players.

AFL Metropolitan - Hillside Football Club

The  Hillside Sharks invested heavily into promoting Towards Zero messages across the season, particularly in Towards Zero Round. The club spent their own money to ensure all captains across all age groups wore a 0 on their back for the round. In addition, they spent time educating coaches and players on road safety - particularly the dangers of drink driving. The Sharks promoted road safety messages within the club rooms and presented clear evidence of this through photos displayed in their application. The club also hosted its own 'Fit 2 Drive' session to educate younger drivers about staying safe on the roads.

AFL Barwon - Inverleigh Football Netball Club

Inverleigh is an isolated small town outside of Geelong with a football and netball club that cares about the safety of its members and participants. The club's grant application clearly articulated this, providing evidence of self-funded buses they run post- club events to get people home safely. In addition, the club ran it's own learner driver information night, focussing on road safety for young people and their parents. They displayed predominantly the TAC messaging and campaigns, investing their own funds into ensuring their patrons used the roads safely going to and from training and matches.
