MEDIA RELEASE: 17 September 2012
The Transport Accident Commission's award winning advertising campaigns will be used to help reduce road trauma in China.
Four campaigns have been provided as part of the TAC's work with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to support global road safety public education campaigns.
The TAC's CEO Janet Dore said the request highlighted the TAC's reputation as a world leader in road safety education.
"China has 20.8 road fatalities per 100,000 population, compared to 5.9 in Australia and 4.6 fatalities per 100,000 people in Victoria," Ms Dore said.
"Victoria is part of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety, a commitment to improving road safety world-wide.
"Through this commitment, developed nations assist developing and under-resourced nations in their efforts to reduce road trauma.
"The TAC has worked with WHO to review public education about road safety around the world and has been pleased to provide campaigns targeting speed and drink driving in China," Ms Dore said.
Two campaigns, Glasses and 10km/h Less (Pizza Man) will be remade in China. Glasses targets drink drivers and 10km/h Less is one of the TAC's first advertisements to reconstruct a crash, that of a pedestrian being hit by a car as he crosses a busy road.
Two other TAC campaigns, Slo Mo and Haunted, will be given a Chinese voice-over and replayed on Chinese television. Slo Mo is a reconstruction-style advertisement showing the results when two cars hitting a truck at different speeds. Haunted tells the sad story of a man who can't forget the little boy he killed when drink driving.
This is not the first time the TAC has helped other countries to reduce the road toll, with campaign material recently provided to Ireland and Bosnia to assist in their road safety campaigning.
