The Transport Accident Commission will be serving up classic movies on an outdoor cinema in regional Victorian towns in the coming weeks.

The TAC has partnered with Cinema PopUp to bring an outdoor cinema experience to regional towns across the state as the weather heats up between now and early February.

The outdoor cinema will transform parks in Echuca, Benalla, Shepparton and Seymour into a hive of activity for four nights, with a different movie featured each night.

This partnership is putting road safety on the big screen and highlighting the important role country Victorians play in the state’s Towards Zero plan for a future free of deaths and serious injuries on our roads.

Regional motorists are over-represented in deaths on Victoria’s roads with 155 people killed on country roads last year, compared with 102 in metropolitan Melbourne.

TAC Road Safety Lead Director Samantha Cockfield said people were four times more likely to die on country roads than those driving in metropolitan areas.

“Too many people are dying on country roads and by partnering with Cinema PopUp we’re reminding regional Victorian about the choices they can make to keep themselves and other road users safe.,” Ms Cockfield said.

“The TAC needs the support of country Victorians to help us work towards a future where no one dies or is seriously injured on our roads.”

Community members will also have a chance to help create an artwork featuring landmarks and famous sights from their town along with a road safety message.

The community will help the artist complete the artwork in the days before the cinema arrives and the finished piece will go on display in the town following the cinema’s departure.
