Children’s Book To Help Save Young Lives

A book teaching children how to be safe getting to and from school has been gifted to every Victorian primary school as part of the Andrews Labor Government's efforts to save young lives.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Luke Donnellan, today joined author Danny Katz for a reading of his book That's the Sound the Street Makes for prep students at Albert Park Primary School.

The book, which teaches children, their parents and carers how to walk to and from school safely, is important reading for Victorian primary schoolers, with pedestrian injury being Australia's leading cause of death for children aged five to nine.

The book has received a must-read endorsement from Premier Daniel Andrews, who has added it to the Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge List.

Today's book reading coincides with the start of the Third UN Global Road Safety Week, which this year focuses on children and road safety.

Worldwide, a child loses their life as a result of road trauma every four minutes and 14 of the 249 people killed on Victoria's roads last year were children, including four aged under five.

The Labor Government has made protecting young lives on our roads a priority, with a $146 million plan to provide young Victorians with best practice education and training to help them become safer road users.
