Free barista coffees at Victoria's top five Driver Reviver sites will be back for the ANZAC Day long weekend as the Transport Accident Commission steps up its efforts to fight fatigue-related crashes.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan has announced the TAC's Pit Stop initiative would be back for at least the next two long weekends following its popularity over the Easter break.

Pit Stops offer motorists a VIP rest stop experience, with free barista coffees, bottled water, luxury toiletries, family activities, competitions and giveaways. Sausage sizzles will raise money to help local State Emergency Services units raise money for rescue equipment.

Mr Donnellan said everyone deserved to get home from the ANZAC Day long weekend safely and that means doing everything possible to be safe on the roads.

"Long weekends are a time when people often find themselves driving longer distances than they're accustomed to, on roads less familiar to them and, when you bring fatigue into the equation, it can be a tragic mix," Mr Donnellan said.

"We've introduced Driver Reviver Pit Stops to encourage drivers to stop and freshen up because drowsiness is deadly and we can't accept a single life lost on our roads."

Thousands of motorists pulled off the state's busiest highways to rest up and enjoy the Pit Stop experience over Easter, with baristas providing more than 4000 free coffees at the state's six top Driver Reviver sites.

Pit Stop was developed in the weeks leading up to Easter in response to Victoria's worst start for lives lost on the roads in ten years. An estimated one-in-five fatal crashes is related to fatigue.

A Pit Stop will be set up at Victoria's five most visited Driver Reviver sites:

  • Balmattum Rest Area near Euroa, on Friday afternoon, Saturday and Monday
  • Wedderburn, will be activated on Friday
  • Stratford, will be activated on Friday
  • Western Hwy near Ballarat will be activated on Monday
  • Calder Hwy at Marong will be activated on Monday
