The Transport Accident Commission has mapped out 24 scenic locations on route to and from Victoria’s ski fields to help people plan their trip around taking rest stops and arriving safely.

The rest-stop locations have been chosen as part of the TAC’s new Breakpoint campaign, encouraging drivers to take a break when driving long distances to the mountains.

TAC road safety manager Samantha Buckis said with drowsy driving contributing to about one-in-four fatalities on Victorian roads, it was important that drivers take a break.

“Huge numbers of people embark on road trips to and from Victoria’s ski resorts each season and if you’re traveling long distances it’s important to take regular breaks.”

“Victoria is a beautiful part of the world so it makes sense to treat the road trip as the first part of your ski holiday by stopping to see the attractions along the way,” Ms Buckis said.

The TAC has chosen interesting locations and attractions for drivers to stop at on route to Mount Buller, Mount Hotham, Falls Creek, Mount Baw Baw and Lake Mountain.

“We have chosen these locations to make the road trip more enjoyable and for drivers to have a scenic view to stop at, get out of the car, freshen up and swap drivers if possible,” Ms Buckis said.

The TAC is encouraging anyone travelling to and from the snow to check out the Breakpoint website and TAC Instagram account before they leave home to help plan their journey.

People can discover the already established breakpoints, or identify their own by uploading a photo to Instagram using the handle #breakpointvic.

“Breakpoint will help people plan their trips and we’re hoping everyone heading to the snow will see this as a great opportunity to make the drive to the mountains part of the adventure,” Ms Buckis said.

“We’re asking drivers to make a choice not to drive when tired and if they’re feeling drowsy to stop and take in some of the best scenery Victoria has to offer on the way to the mountains.”

Ms Buckis said there were a number of things people could do to ensure a safe road trip.

“Every safe road trip starts with a good night’s sleep the night before and a plan that includes regular breaks on the way to your destination, and on the way home, to stretch the legs or even take a power nap.”
