Round 11 approved projects
Round 11 attracted the highest number of applications since the Community Road Safety Grants Program commenced in 2008. The TAC received 44 applications, totalling almost $1 million. Of the 44 applications received in Round 11, the TAC has approved 30 projects, totalling more than $463,000 in grants. Local councils and Rotary groups were well represented, along with primary schools, sporting organisations and other community groups.
Local councils focused primarily on the development of municipal road safety strategies. Rotary groups have mainly focused on supporting the installation of breath testing devices in licensed premises. The smaller community groups focused on a variety of projects including cycling, youth road safety and community engagement.
With the increasing popularity of the Community Road Safety Grants Program, the assessment panel continues to emphasise the need for community groups to develop high quality applications and provide data to support their application. The Community Road Safety Grants Program Guidelines can be accessed at www.tacsafety.com.au/crsg. These guidelines provide comprehensive information to support the preparation of high quality applications.
In the eleven rounds of the grants program, the TAC has now:
-
Received 370 applications
-
Approved 243 projects and
-
Committed funding totalling around $4.1 million in grants.
Below is a summary of successful applications in the latest round of funding.

Municipal and Community Road Safety Strategies
The TAC wishes to express its thanks to those who participated in the review of municipal and community road safety strategies conducted by Nucleus Consulting group for the TAC. Key attributes of successful and sustainable projects were identified, and these should be taken into account when developing new project applications and plans:
-
Substantiate your applications with the most up-to-date research and data.
-
Consider who else has been funded to undertake road safety activities in your area and whether you could link up with them.
-
Engage the community.
-
Consider partnering with neighbouring Shires or Councils to develop a generic road safety strategy that suits the whole region, but which can be adapted to meet local needs and priorities.
-
Look for Leaders as well as Helpers, and share the load with them.
A Fact Sheet that explores these ‘tips’ is currently being finalised and will be published at www.tacsafety.com.au/crsg in time for Round 12.
New Road Safety Education Portal
Road safety education plays an important role in supporting Victoria’s road safety strategy.
The aim of Victorian road safety education is to reduce the risk of injury and death to children and young people from road trauma and to lay the foundations for safe road use throughout life.
The delivery of road safety education in Victoria is supported by the Victorian Road Safety Education Reference Group.
A new website has been developed to assist Victorian teachers, early childhood professionals, students and parents and carers to easily locate road safety education resources and information. The website, www.roadsafetyeducation.vic.gov.au is an excellent source of information and best practice programs for community groups, which have an interest in road safety education from birth to driver licensing.
