Lives lost continue to climb

The Transport Accident Commission is pleading with Victorian road users to head safety warnings, as the number of lives lost surpass 100.

Road safety authorities are particularly concerned with the rise in regional fatalities, the increase in pedestrian and motorcycle rider deaths, and the number of young people dying – with deaths in road users aged 18-25 almost double this time last year.

In response to the unacceptable level of road trauma and to support Victoria Police’s enforcement efforts, the TAC has launched a new campaign targeting risk-taking behaviour on our roads.

The campaign will deter road users from engaging in unsafe behaviours – reminding people that if they take risks on the road, they will get caught.

TAC CEO Joe Calafiore said that while campaigns and education are vital when it comes to reducing road trauma, the community needs to work together to draw a line in the sand

“We are urging Victorians to drive safely for everyone. By slowing down, buckling up, putting our phones away and separating drinking from driving, we can all help make our roads safe.”

To support Victoria Police’s long weekend Operation Regal, the TAC is providing funding for additional road safety enforcement shifts on regional Victorian roads.

The TAC will also combat fatigue over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, with TAC Pause Stops set up along major, high-traffic arterial roads.

As we move into the winter months, road users are being urged to prepare for all sorts of weather.

Slowing down, staying alert and driving to the conditions becomes even more important when weather and road conditions are poor.

Mr Calafiore encouraged motorists to plan ahead before any long drive and make safe choices when behind the wheel.

“We are urging Victorians to drive safely for everyone this long weekend. By slowing down, buckling up, putting our phones away and separating drinking from driving, we can all help make our roads safe.”
