Response to Peter Moore’s Geelong Advertiser column Thursday October 3

Peter Moore, it seems, is again most upset about the TAC’s “preoccupation” with speed limits.
The fact is that excessive or inappropriate speed is the primary cause of around a third of fatalities in Victoria.
The TAC is committed with its road safety partners to a Safe System approach – having safer drivers in safer cars on safer roads. Ensuring drivers travel at the speed limit and according to the prevailing conditions would mean a safer road network and the TAC does not back away from its work in this area.
Mr Moore may not be aware that in the past year, more than 42,000 motorists per month on average in Victoria have been caught speeding not just by fixed cameras, but by ones in marked police cars as well.
The Geelong Advertiserruns regular reports on police operations across the region, highlighting their importance in reducing our road toll from year to year.
It is also worth noting that an independent report from the Victorian Auditor General’s office found that speed cameras are focused on road safety, not raising revenue.
We make no apologies for targeting speed and will continue to offer our full support for the use of speed cameras and police operations that aim to keep Victoria’s roads safe.
Yours sincerely,
Janet Dore
