Regional leaders from across Victoria will join road safety decision makers next week to discuss ways to reduce road trauma in their communities.

The inaugural regional Towards Zero Road Safety Leadership Symposium on July 7 will call on community leaders to embrace the Towards Zero approach to road safety.

The event is led by the Victorian Road Safety Partnership with the Andrews Government’s recently announced Towards Zero 2016-2020 Action Plan as its focus.

TAC Chief Executive Officer Joe Calafiore said the Symposium was an opportunity for councils and regional businesses to learn from each other about how they can make a difference within their communities.

“The Towards Zero Road Safety Leadership Symposium brings road safety professionals together to share their knowledge about key issues driving road trauma in regional areas.”

“We all have a role to play in improving road safety within our communities and the Symposium is a chance for regional leaders to better understand the important role they play,” Mr Calafiore said.

Guest speaker, Jim Harland from the New Zealand Transport Agency will speak to attendees about New Zealand’s Visiting Drivers Project, a project aimed at improving road safety for local and international visitors.

Representatives from Mornington, Mildura and Latrobe City council’s will provide updates on road safety projects within their communities.

Mr Calafiore said rural roads, speed management and improvements to infrastructure were high on the Symposium’s agenda.

“More than $340 million is being spent on high risk rural roads where nearly half of all deaths on happen.”

“We are focused on creating an environment that can prevent people from dying or being seriously injured on our roads,” Mr Calafiore said.
