Collaborations

The 'Victorian Neurotrauma Initiatives – a research program of the TAC' is pleased to collaborate with the following organisations:

National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)

The National Health and Medical Research Council is Australia's peak body for:

  • supporting health and medical research
  • developing health advice for the Australian community, health professionals and governments; and
  • providing advice on ethical behaviour in health care and in the conduct of health and medical research.

The 'Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative – a research program of TAC' collaborated with the NHMRC on the following funding opportunities:

  • NHMRC Project Grant Funding 2009 Round
  • NHMRC Project Grant Funding 2010 Round

This was an exciting step for the 'Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative – a research program of TAC' project funding. It allowed applications from Victorian neurotrauma researchers to be considered simultaneously by Australia's peak health research body and by the 'Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative – a research program of TAC'.

  • NHMRC/VNI TRIP Fellowships 2010 Round
  • NHMRC/VNI Practitioner Fellowship 2010 Round
  • VNI/NHMRC Career Development Awards 2010 Round

Fellowships and Awards were offered through the 2010 NHMRC Round. This represented a central component of the 'Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative – a research program of TAC's' plan to build capacity and capability within the local research sector.

Applicants based in Victoria were able to nominate themselves for consideration.

Cooperation with NHMRC allowed the 'Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative – a research program of TAC' to take advantage of NHMRC's considerable expertise.

Moreover, this application process minimised the amount of time researchers spent completing applications and maximised their time completing valuable neurotrauma research.

The 'Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative – a research program of TAC' looks forward to the next phases of this collaboration.

Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation (ONF)

The 'Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative – a research program of the TAC' (formerly the VNI) established a memorandum of understanding with the ONF in mid January 2008.

Both organisations recognised that their aims and objectives were closely aligned and that a collaborative working relationship would facilitate each organsation meeting its individual objectives and enhance research and health outcomes for the international neurotrauma community.

In order to progress the collaboration, an International Exchange Program was established.

  • In November 2008 a delegation from the ONF visited Melbourne, Australia
  • In May 2009, a delegation from the VNI visited Toronto, Hamilton, and Ottawa in Ontario, Canada

In July 2009, the 'Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative – a research program of the TAC' and the ONF announced a collaborative funding round for joint projects between Victoria and Ontario.

  • Call for Expressions of Interest (EOI).

In October 2009, the 'Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative – a research program of the TAC' and the ONF organised a networking event at the International Spinal Cord Society meeting in Florence, Italy. Researchers were able to further their collaboration with their Ontarian colleagues.

In March 2010, the 'Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative – a research program of TAC' and the ONF organised a networking event at the International Brain Injury Association congress in Washington, USA. Delegates from Ontario and Victoria were able to further their collaboration.

What is the ONF?

The impact of neurotrauma in communities across Ontario, Canada is significant, predictable and preventable. Those living with a complex chronic disorder such as an acquired brain or spinal cord injury want to live productive lives as full citizens of the province.

These realities form the mission of the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation: To prevent the incidence and prevalence of neurotrauma and to improve the quality of life for those living with these injuries.

The Foundation strategically invests in research and knowledge mobilization activities that facilitate a change process to address this critical mission. It is easily stated but we know it takes a determined and focused effort to bring about results.

With funding support from the Ministry of Health and Long Term care, the Foundation works with consumers, researchers, practitioners, policy makers and decision makers to create our research agenda and set in motion both our research and knowledge mobilization activities to address issues that will make a difference in the lives of those living with a chronic spinal cord or acquired brain injury and in preventing this occurrence in the first place.

Neurosciences Victoria (NSV)

Neurosciences Victoria (NSV) has provided project management support to the 'Victorian neurotrauma initiatives – a research program of the TAC.'

The NSV is dedicated to the continued development of the world-class neuroscience biocluster in Melbourne through a program of strategic investment in the gap between academic discovery research and commercial development.

By providing focus and direction for neuroscience research and through the creation and development of strong industry partnerships, NSV provides a unique and effective interface between neuroscientists, the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, investors and public funding bodies.
