This is a new policy on the payment of travel and accommodation expenses for immediate family members attending the funeral of a TAC client.  To be eligible for these benefits:

  • the date of accident must be on or after 14 December 2016, and
  • the person has died as the result of the transport accident, and
  • the immediate family member must normally reside more than 100kms from the place where the funeral, burial or cremation is held.

This benefit is capped to the amount of $5,000 per death.

The policy has been updated with information which confirms that the TAC is unable to pay for travel by UberX or any other commercial passenger vehicle which was driven by a person who does not hold the appropriate accreditation with the Victorian Taxi Services Commission (or an Interstate taxi regulator).

However, clients who have used UberX or other ride share services for TAC related travel before 15 July 2016 are encouraged to contact the TAC on 1300 654 329.

This policy has been updated as the result of the recent repeal of the 2013 legislative amendment which limits the TAC's liability to pay common law damages to people who suffered mental injury or nervous shock as a result of an injured person's own negligence or if they were attempting to commit suicide.
