In the last 10 years, 444 pedestrians lost their lives on Victorian roads, with one third of pedestrians who lost their lives aged 70 years or over. Most (72%) lost their lives in Metropolitan Melbourne, and most (65%) were male. In the last five years, almost 200 pedestrians lost their lives on Victorian roads.
Common types of crashes resulting in pedestrian deaths between 2011 - 2015 involved the pedestrian:
- crossing the road and being struck from the near side (36%)
- crossing the road and being struck from the far side (16%) and
- playing, working, laying or standing on carriageway (11%)

A total of 33 pedestrians lost their lives on Victorian roads in 2015, which represents 13% of all lives lost in 2015. Of the 33 pedestrian lives lost in 2015:
- 22 people lost their lives in the Melbourne metropolitan area
- 60% lost their lives on roads signposted at 60km/h or lower (33% of these were aged 70+)
- 33% of pedestrians who lost their lives were aged 70+
