The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road featuring the TAC People’s Ride returns this January, bringing world-class cycling to Geelong and the Surf Coast while championing safety Race for all road users.
The event will put road safety in the spotlight, bringing thousands of riders, spectators and road safety advocates together along one of Australia’s most iconic routes. It is not only a celebration of cycling but also an opportunity to reinforce the importance of sharing the road and protecting vulnerable road users.
Nine cyclists lost their lives on Victoria's roads last year. For every life lost, there are significantly more riders who sustain injuries in road accidents each year, and the consequences are often life changing. The latest TAC data shows that 430 cyclists were hospitalised following a road accident in 2024-25, underscoring the urgent need to protect those on two wheels and encourage safer behaviour from all road users.
The TAC’s message is simple: Be Seen. Be Safe. Share the Road. For drivers, that means slowing down, giving cyclists at least one metre of space when passing, and staying alert, especially on winding coastal roads. For riders, it means wearing bright clothing, using lights day and night and following the road rules. These small actions make a big difference.
The TAC will be on-site throughout the event, delivering interactive education sessions on how cyclists can stay safe on the roads. Families can take part in activities designed to teach children about safe cycling practices and get some fun give aways while experienced riders can learn how to improve visibility and reduce their risk on the road. All participants can design their own jersey for their chance to win custom Santini kit for their whole crew.
The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race runs until Sunday 1 February across the Geelong and the Surf Coast region.
