The weather has finally warmed and the Transport Accident Commission has issued a list of tips for motorists planning to get away this summer.

With more cars on the roads travelling further distances, often in unfamiliar territory, the Transport Accident Commission is encouraging Victorian motorists to start summer on our roads looking out for each other.

TAC road safety manager Samantha Buckis said there were plenty of things Victorians can do to ensure everyone enjoys a safe and happy summer break.

“We know many Victorians are looking forward to a break over the summer holidays, often involving long distance car trips on regional and unfamiliar roads,’ Ms Buckis said.

“There’s no reason why everyone can’t arrive at their holiday destination safely, if we all take responsibility for our own driving behavior and follow a few simple tips when planning longer journeys.”

To help Victorians get from A to B safely, the TAC has compiled a list of basic tips to guide motorists when they’re traveling. They range from planning rest stops and adhering to speed limits to ensuring vehicles are in good condition before hitting the road.

The safe driving prompt follows a tragic year on Victorian roads with 281 lives lost so far in 2016, with 126 of these occurring on rural roads.

“Driving in unfamiliar territory is always risky, especially when you’ve been on the road for some time and have a car full of children,” Ms Buckis said.

“By familiarising yourself with the route you’ll be taking, planning rest stops, allowing adequate time to get there, driving at safe speeds and taking steps to avoid distractions, each of us can do a lot to reduce trauma on our roads.”

Here are five tips from the TAC to keep yourself, your family and other road users safe this summer, and beyond:

  1. Plan Ahead

Planning ahead is the key to a safe and relaxed holiday. Before hitting the road, plan your route and work out how long it will take to reach your destination. Look for towns and sites along the way, so you can factor in rest stops and swap drivers every couple of hours. Make sure you’ve had a good night’s sleep before setting out and avoid driving at times you would normally be asleep.

  2. How safe is your car?

A long time on the road can take its toll on your car, so making sure it’s in good condition before embarking on your trip is vital. Good brakes and tyres could be all that is standing between you and a crash when something unexpected happens.

  3. Rethink your speed

Holiday road trips often see you travelling on unfamiliar roads, in variable conditions and many will be towing a caravan or boat. With a lot of traffic on the roads, you may need to allow extra time to get there. Remember to stay within the speed limit and always choose an appropriate speed for the conditions.

  4. No distractions

With so much traffic on the roads, even a minor distraction can turn deadly in the event of something unexpected. Come up with strategies to avoid distraction, like putting your phone in the boot and ensuring young passengers have plenty to keep them occupied.

  5. Drinking and driving – they’re better apart

An easy one to achieve – even small amounts of alcohol can inhibit your driving ability so avoid it altogether while on the move. Driving the morning after drinking can also have serious consequences so a quiet night and good night’s sleep before departure is always a great idea.
