The Minister for the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), John Lenders, today congratulated Rutherglen Winery Walkabout organisers on the growing popularity of the event and their strong commitment to road safety.

Mr Lenders said the event, which attracted 15,000 people every year, celebrated the region’s local wine and gourmet food without compromising people’s safety.

“During the festival, people are reminded about what they can do to keep safe. There’s prominent signage, free public breathalysers and a designated driver program – all geared towards preventing drink driving,” Mr Lenders said.

“In the lead up to this year’s event, 35 serving staff from the area will also attend a Responsible Serving of Alcohol (RSA) course.

“This commitment is commendable and demonstrates that the Rutherglen community is prepared to do what it takes to safeguard events.”

Mr Lenders said the ultimate responsibility still rested with patrons.

“When sampling wine it can be difficult to keep track of how much you have consumed, and judging your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is even harder,” he said.

“You can’t judge your BAC by how you feel - the only way to be totally sure is not to drink if driving.

“To help prevent a great weekend turning sour, and remove the temptation of getting behind the wheel, plan your transport well in advance.”

Recognising the importance of designated drivers, the TAC gives participants in the designated driver program the opportunity to win a case of Rutherglen wine to be enjoyed at a later date.

The TAC has the following advice for patrons heading to the Walkabout:
• plan ahead and if you’re planning to drink alcohol, take the shuttle bus, designate a non-drinking driver, or take a cab;
• eat regularly and alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic ones; and
• if you’re unsure about your BAC level, test yourself at a free TAC breathalyser station or ask about alternative transport options.
