MEDIA RELEASE: 27 January 2009

The Transport Accident Commission’s move to Geelong continues to pay dividends as Victoria plays host to an interstate summit today.

Leading Victorian authorities will meet the Tasmanian Legislative Council Select Committee on Road Safety at the TAC headquarters in Geelong this afternoon.

The Victorian Parliamentary Road Safety Committee Chairman John Eren said the Victorian groups would share their expertise on partnerships and programs that had helped the state achieve its lowest ever road toll in 2008.

“The two states share a vision to dramatically reduce road trauma,” Mr Eren said.

“Tasmania has similar priority road safety issues to Victoria, focussing on ways to reduce road crashes, constantly improving safety measures and ensuring appropriate care of crash victims.”

TAC CEO Janet Dore said the organisation had not missed a beat since moving to Geelong, as shown by its ability to host this significant road safety summit.

“Our focus on supporting our clients and reducing road trauma is continuing from Geelong,” Ms Dore said.

“The TAC is pleased to host this event and showcase the road safety initiatives such as trauma research and the programs that helped Victoria achieve its lowest ever road toll last year.”

The Tasmanian Legislative Council Select Committee on Road Safety Chairman Don Wing said the committee’s ultimate goal was to reduce road trauma.

“The committee is inquiring into road safety measures that have been adopted, proposed or recommended interstate and overseas, with relevance to Tasmania,” Mr Wing said.

“Victoria was the first logical stop and the committee welcomes the chance to discuss road safety with representatives from the TAC, Victoria Police, VicRoads and the Department of Justice.”
