The message from Geelong star Andrew Mackie is simple: plan your trip home from Saturday night’s game before the first ball is bounced.

Cats fans are used to seeing Mackie running from defensive 50 with ball in hand, but the defender took on a different role in this latest Transport Accident Commission (TAC) advertisement.

Rather than leading an opponent around Simonds Stadium, the three-time premiership star instead took the reins of a Shetland pony, having already ridden a young girl’s bike and sat in a car between raucous Gold Coast Suns supporters.

The video is screening on Cats TV (www.geelongcats.com.au/catstv) and the Blood Oath Facebook page, urging fans not to drink-drive following Saturday night’s historic first match under lights against Gold Coast.

TAC Chief Executive Officer Janet Dore said the message is strategically targeted at a younger audience.

“Statistics tell us people aged 18 to 25 are more likely to drive above the legal blood-alcohol concentration limit, which makes our partnership with the AFL all the more important,” Ms Dore said.

“While football attracts supporters of all ages, 18-25-year-olds feature strongly in game attendances, and we hope they heed our message.

“If you drink and drive, you are a bloody idiot.”

Patrons attending the game can be breath-tested at exit gates around Simonds Stadium before hopping in their cars or moving on to other venues.

The TAC will continue providing breathalyser staff for all Cats’ home games this season, in the perennial push to make every journey a safe one.
