Media Release: 19 March, 2013

A Port Melbourne man has been ordered to pay almost $8000 to the Transport Accident Commission, after failing to declare income from employment while receiving TAC benefits.

Damien Beaumont today pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on a charge relating to fraud, where he obtained the sum of $8167.83 in loss of earnings (LOE) benefits to which he was not entitled.

Magistrate Dan Muling also handed the 51-year-old a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Mr Beaumont was injured in a transport accident in June 2011. The TAC accepted his claim for compensation, including providing Loss of Earnings benefits. Mr Beaumont was advised to notify the TAC if he returned to work.

Evidence later found Mr Beaumont to have had casual employment later in that year, but did not notify the TAC.

Mr Beaumont has now reached an agreement with the TAC to pay off the debt.

Transport accident charges are used to pay for treatment and support services for people injured in transport accidents.

The TAC has a responsibility to the community to ensure the financial health of the TAC scheme so that it can continue to look after injured Victorians.
