Unsolicited phone calls spark TAC fraud warning

The Transport Accident Commission has issued a warning to Victorians to be wary of unsolicited phone calls relating to TAC claims.

The warning follows a number of reports from members of the public who had been contacted by a caller attempting to find out whether they were a TAC client with an active claim.

The caller appears to be contacting people at random and has attempted to gain personal information.

In some cases the caller has stated that money is owed to the TAC or they have falsely advised the recipient that they need to lodge a TAC claim.

TAC Chief Executive Officer Janet Dore said these calls may be fraudulent and urged anyone receiving them not to provide information.

"If you receive a call of this nature, it is vital that you protect yourself by not providing any personal information," Ms Dore said.

"Ask the caller for their name, their organisation, email address and phone number and if they cannot confirm your claim number, hang up immediately."

Ms Dore said anyone who is suspicious of a caller purporting to be from the TAC should immediately contact the TAC Customer Service Centre on 1300 654 329.

They could also file a report at scamwatch.gov.au or by calling SCAM Watch on 1300 795 995.
