Suspected fraudulent phone calls purporting to be from the Transport Accident Commission have prompted calls for Victorians to be wary of unsolicited callers.
The warning follows a rising number of reports in recent weeks from members of the public who were contacted by a caller attempting to find out whether they were a TAC client with an active claim.
The caller purports to be a TAC staff member and appears to be contacting people at random with attempts to gain personal information.
In some cases the caller has falsely claimed the recipient would receive payment from the TAC and requested bank account details.
TAC Head of Financial and Corporate Services Tony Dudley warned Victorians to protect themselves from fraudulent activity by refusing to provide personal information to unknown callers.
"If you receive a call from anyone who says they work for the TAC, do not under any circumstances hand over any personal information unless you have established the caller's credentials," Mr Dudley said.
"Ask the caller for their name, their organisation, email address and phone number and if they cannot confirm your claim number, hang up immediately."
Mr Dudley said anyone who is suspicious of a caller purporting to be from the TAC should immediately contact the TAC Customer Service Centre on 1300 654 329.
They could also file a report at scamwatch.gov.au or by calling SCAM Watch on 1300 795 995.
