The Victorian Government is making it easier for those in the market for a second-hand car to find the safest vehicle possible using the updated Used Car Safety Ratings (UCSR).
Working in partnership, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) and Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) ratings show that life-saving technology comes in vehicles of all sizes and prices.
The ratings use data from 9.5 million vehicles and 2.6 million injuries from police-reported crashes between 1987 and 2023.
The best-performing large vehicle was the 2008-2016 Ford Falcon FG, while the best medium pick was a 2017-2023 Toyota Camry, with the Mazda 3 2019-2023 coming in as the best performing small car.
Of the 561 vehicle models rated, 130 achieved a 5-star rating, and 72 earned a ‘safer pick’ status for their performance across all key safety categories.
All but one of the ‘safer pick’ vehicles can be purchased second-hand for less than $25,000, and more than half for $10,000 or less.
These ratings make it easier for Victorians to find out which vehicles have important safety features including auto-emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, electronic stability control and lane keep assist.
