Information for the Auburn South Primary School community

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) can provide support in many ways to help children and their families after a transport accident.

We know this can be a challenging time, and that children and young people can have unique needs that are different from adults. Sometimes the impact of an accident, and the support your child and family may need can take some time to become obvious.

This page has information about the type of support the TAC can offer and how you can access it.

Who can make a TAC claim?

To access support from the TAC for your child or family, you first need to make a TAC claim.

You can make a TAC claim for your child or family members if all of the following apply:

  • You, or someone you represent, was involved in an accident caused by a moving vehicle, such as a car, motorcycle, bus, train or tram. This includes witnessing an accident.
  • You, or someone you represent, was injured in the accident (including mental injury).
  • The accident happened in Victoria or interstate involving a Victorian registered vehicle.

What is a mental injury only claim?

You may be eligible to make a TAC claim for a mental injury if you or your child:

  • was involved in a transport accident, or
  • are a bereaved family member or friend of a person who died in a transport accident, or
  • saw a transport accident, or
  • helped at the scene of a transport accident, or
  • saw the immediate aftermath of a transport accident.

Note; the mental injury must first be diagnosed by a health professional.

What support can the TAC provide?

The type and amount of support you receive, and the length of time you need support, will depend on your circumstances. The TAC can provide a range of supports for children and families impacted by transport accidents including:

When should you make a TAC claim?

Generally, you have 12 months to lodge a claim from the date of the accident, or from the date an injury from the accident first becomes evident. There are exceptions to the 12-month timeframe, particularly for children impacted by accidents.

If you are unsure about making a claim or the information you need to provide, you can call us on 1300 654 329 to discuss your circumstances.

How to make a claim

You can make a claim on behalf of your child, grandchild or another family member.

You can do this by using our online lodgement form or calling us on 1300 654 329. You do not need to complete a new form for each family member.

More information can be found on our how to make a TAC claim page.

What happens next?

After you make a TAC claim, we’ll contact you to let you know the outcome.

You’ll receive a TAC claim number and instructions on what to do next – keep this number safe because you’ll need it whenever you get in touch with us.
