In 2015, more than half (54%) of all lives lost on Victorian roads occurred in regional Victoria - only 25% of the Victorian population lives outside the metropolitan area.
The vast majority (77%) of deaths on rural roads occur on roads with 100km/h+ speed limits, compared to less than one in five (18%) deaths occurring on 100km/h+ roads in Metro Melbourne. Of the deaths on Rural Roads:
- 49% lost their lives in single vehicle crashes (compared to 28% in Metro Melbourne)
- 21% lost their lives in head on crashes (compared to 10% in Metro Melbourne)
- 15% lost their lives at intersections (compared to 23% in Metro Melbourne)
