Avoid ‘cabin fever’ safely in the winter school holidays

The Transport Accident Commission is reminding drivers to look out for themselves and others on the roads during the winter school holidays.

As families hit the roads to entertain kids before cabin fever sets in, there are a few simple things drivers can do to ensure a safe journey.

TAC Road Safety Director Samantha Cockfield said everyone had a role to play to make sure every journey on Victoria’s road was safe.

Ms Cockfield reminded motorists to be alert when driving, with wintry conditions increasing dangers on the road.

“Safe journeys, even shorter ones, start with planning,” Ms Cockfield said.

“Ensuring your vehicle’s safety is crucial during winter months. Check that your tyres and brakes are in good condition and all your lights are working.

“Black ice, fog, mist, rain, wind and land slips are all potential hazards when driving during winter months.

“People should slow down and drive to the conditions, allowing a safe distance between you and the car in front,” she said.

Ms Cockfield said it was important that people heading off for a longer trip during the holidays ensured they were prepared.

“Fatigue and speed are common factors to crashes on the roads during school holiday periods.

“Starting well rested and planning your route so that you can take your time and drive to the conditions becomes even more important when road conditions are poor.

“Turn your headlights on, even during the day, and allow plenty of travel time.”
