Response to Peter Moore’s Geelong Advertiser column

It appears that Mr Moore (Opinion, February 5) is yet to grasp the link between speeding and road trauma. If he did, he would know that exceeding the speed limit by as little as 5km/h in a 60 zone is enough to double your crash risk.

I also take exception to the statement that the "TAC's sole answer to road accidents appears to be to fine motorists for even minimal speed infringements".

While the TAC does fund some police road safety operations in high-risk areas and at high-risk times, the organisation has no role in enforcing speed limits

The vast majority of motorists who drive within the speed limits applaud the work of Victoria Police in targeting the drivers who put at risk the safety of all road users.

This activity, like the TAC's work to promote safe road behaviour, is crucial if we are to create a safer overall road system that prevents deaths and serious injuries.
