Safer Roads (SSRIP) Program

Safer Roads (formerly SSRIP) has a number of programs currently under development which could provide funding to support safety improvement on local roads. The Department of Transport, including Safer Roads, will be partnering with the TAC to deliver workshops across the state in May 2020 to provide further information. A summary of upcoming activity and key contacts is provided below.

Safe Pedestrian Program

A proposed upcoming program will focus on the transformation of activity precincts, routes or locations with a history of pedestrian casualty crashes. Approved projects will have a high level of Safe System alignment and will aim to improve safety for pedestrians and encourage walking. Treatments could be wombat crossings, traffic calming, strip shopping centres, high risk school speed zones and road use reallocation.

If you have an area or project of interest that you think fits this brief, please get in touch with your local VicRoads or Regional Roads Victoria Office.

Local Roads Initiative

An upcoming engagement-led local roads initiative is currently in planning. This initiative will be run through the Safer Roads/SSRIP progam and seek to identify community problem areas to co-develop and plan safe system treatments in partnership with local government, the community and Regional Roads Victoria/VicRoads. The initial program will trial 3-5 sites across the state during 2020-2021.

To register your interest in participating in this program, please contact: Frances.Taylor@roads.vic.gov.au

Federal Blackspot Program

Applications for the 2019/2020 federal blackspot program have closed and assessment is currently underway. The 2021-2022 blackspot program will be launched in May. Workshops at VicRoads/Regional Roads Victoria offices will be held to coincide with crash data availability.

The presentation will discuss the outcomes from the previous year, the application system, changes from the previous year and a session on project management requirements for this program.

The next round of applications will require Movement and Place data to be entered. Following the program launch in May, training on Movement and Place requirements will be planned for June.

Please contact Martin.Habgood@roads.vic.gov.au for further enquiries about the Federal Blackspot Program.

Movement and Place

Complete Streets Victoria

To support the implementation of movement and place, the Department of Transport is developing a design guide for urban roads and streets, as well as a companion ‘cycling guide’. The guides allow for a more complete conversation on the future roles our roads and streets play for all users, by visually communicating future options that integrate transport and land use. Once developed these guides will support departments, agencies and local government to plan, develop, deliver and manage roads and streets with a holistic view of all street users. To support the development of the guides, DoT will seek feedback on content, usability and applicability of the guide.

Please contact the project team rachael.ashton@transport.vic.gov.au to seek further information.
